Key takeaway: GPT Live 1.1 (written GPT-Live-1.1 by OpenAI) is the new model behind ChatGPT Voice, rolled out on 20 October 2026 with a smaller sibling, GPT-Live-1.1 Quip. OpenAI says it brings more natural accents across languages, and there are new voices for French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and Mexican Spanish. Free users get a limited amount of Quip; paid plans get more time. OpenAI’s note covers ChatGPT Voice only, not the developer API.

  • What’s new: GPT-Live-1.1 and GPT-Live-1.1 Quip, more natural accents, more varied phrases while it searches, and a new English voice called Bubbie. (release notes)
  • Where to switch: Settings > Voice > Voice. “Voices may vary by region and account.”
  • Not included: video and screen sharing. Those stay in Advanced Voice. (ChatGPT Voice help)

Research-based news. We haven’t tried the new voices ourselves yet. Facts come from OpenAI’s release notes and help page, checked 22 October 2026, with the voice-time table and prices rechecked 23 October 2026. Prices are in US dollars (USD).

What changed on 20 October

The ChatGPT release notes dated 20 October 2026 say ChatGPT Voice now uses GPT-Live-1.1, plus GPT-Live-1.1 Quip, a smaller model. OpenAI says the update gives more natural accents across languages and more varied phrases while it looks things up. The help page describes it as a voice that listens and speaks at the same time.

The new GPT Live 1.1 voices, by language

Language Voices
French Aube, Rivage
German Sonna, Miko
Hindi Leher, Neer
Japanese Himari, Rindō
Korean Haetsal, Hanul
Mexican Spanish Tinta, Arrullo
English (new) Bubbie
Base voices Arbor, Breeze, Cove, Ember, Juniper, Maple, Sol, Spruce, Vale

The help page also lists two Brazilian Portuguese voices, Viola and Rio. They aren’t in the 20 October release note, so we don’t count them as part of this launch. (help page)

How to switch your voice

Open Settings > Voice > Voice and pick one. The help page also shows a Language option under Settings > Voice. Which voices you see “may vary by region and account”. OpenAI’s preset personalities don’t apply to GPT-Live.

How much voice time each plan gets

Limits run over a rolling 24 hours (the last 24 hours, not a calendar day). From the ChatGPT Voice help page, checked 23 Oct 2026:

Plan Voice time
Free Limited, GPT-Live-1.1 Quip
Go 3 hours (Quip)
Plus 3 hours
Pro ($100/month) 15 hours
Pro ($200/month) Unlimited, “subject to abuse guardrails”
Business Standard 3 hours, then 1.25 credits a minute
Business Premium 15 hours, then 1.25 credits a minute
Enterprise (USD usage billing) $0.05 a minute

For reference, Go is $8 a month and Plus $20 a month, both billed monthly only (US prices, from OpenAI’s ChatGPT Learn pricing page, checked 23 Oct 2026). The help page also lists K-12 teachers (3 hours), legacy Enterprise and Edu plans (3 hours), and Enterprise, Edu and Clinicians plans on credit-based pricing (1.25 credits a minute).

What it can and can’t do

  • Can: use web search, memory, plugins and connected apps, and take text and images in the same chat.
  • Can’t: video or screen sharing. Advanced Voice still does those.
  • Not built for groups: it isn’t optimised for conversations with several speakers.
  • Transcripts aren’t word-for-word.

Useful for business owners and creators

These are our ideas, not OpenAI features:

  • Practise a tricky call in your customers’ language, such as explaining a price rise in Hindi or Korean, before you make it for real.
  • Talk through a video outline on a walk, then ask for a written list of points. If you’d rather turn those talked-through ideas into weekly clips, AIFix Autopilot handles clipping and posting for creators.
  • Rehearse a podcast intro and ask for feedback on pacing.

Privacy note

OpenAI’s help page says voice audio clips are kept for 30 days.

What we checked, and what we’ll test

On 22 October 2026 we read the 20 October entry in the ChatGPT release notes and the ChatGPT Voice help page, including its plan table. We haven’t used the new voices yet. When we do, we’ll compare one Hindi and one French voice on a short booking-style conversation and note any limits we hit.
