Verdict: the best AI receptionist for small business depends on your calls
The best AI receptionist for small business depends on how your calls look and how the tool bills you. An AI receptionist is software that answers your phone, answers common questions, takes messages and, on some plans, books appointments. We compared six on each maker’s own pricing page on 22 October 2026. All prices are in US dollars (USD): none of the six showed local-currency prices.
- Cheapest start: Upfirst Starter at $24.95 a month, or $20 a month paid annually, for 30 calls. Next is Dialzara Business Lite at $29 a month for 60 minutes.
- Clearest booking on an entry plan: Upfirst says it “books appointments directly into Google Calendar, Outlook, Calendly, Acuity Scheduling, Square, and Clio Manage”. Rosie books on your calendar only from its $149 Scale plan; its $49 plan sends booking links by text.
- Predictable bills: Goodcall charges per unique customer, with “No per-minute charges”, from $79 a month.
- Phone, chat and texts in one: Frontdesk bundles voice, web chat, text messages and a CRM (customer list) for $99 a month, or $79 a month annually.
- Already use RingCentral? Its AI Receptionist is an add-on that “Starts at $39”. What that price covers is unconfirmed.
- We don’t name one winner. We haven’t made test calls yet.
Research-based overview. We have not tested these tools hands-on yet. Everything below comes from each vendor’s published pricing, checked 22 October 2026. Every tool here is paid after its trial or demo.
At a glance: entry price, what it counts and booking (USD)
| Tool | Entry price (USD) | What it counts | Free way to try | Appointment booking |

| RingCentral AI Receptionist | "Starts at $39" (unit unconfirmed) | Unconfirmed | Unconfirmed | Unconfirmed |
What we checked
- Read the pricing page of all six tools on 22 Oct 2026 (Upfirst, Rosie, Goodcall, Frontdesk, Dialzara, RingCentral)
- Noted what each plan counts (calls, minutes or customers), the overage price and the free trial or demo
- Noted what each maker says about appointment booking, languages and phone numbers outside the US
- Read three Reddit threads where owners share their experience (used as opinions only)
- Not done yet: hands-on test calls with each tool
What we checked, and what we haven’t tested yet
We checked prices, what each plan counts, trials, booking wording and global notes (the list under the table). We have not made any test calls. Before we add a verdict on quality, we plan to call each trial or demo with the same test scripts for a salon and a clinic and:
- Ask about hours, prices and location, then something off-script. Does it say “I don’t know”, or guess?
- Ask for a person. How fast is the handoff, and does the person get a summary?
- Book, move and cancel an appointment.
- Call with a strong accent, and once in a second language.
- Try connecting a phone number from outside the US (for example the UK, the UAE, India or Australia).
- Check what the owner gets after each call: a text, an email, a transcript or a recording.
Three ways AI receptionists charge you
- Per call: Upfirst counts calls (30 on Starter). A long call costs the same as a short one.
- Per minute: Rosie and Dialzara count talk minutes, and Frontdesk counts voice minutes. Long or confused calls use more.
- Per unique customer: Goodcall counts “how many different people it helped”. Repeat callers and long calls don’t add cost.
Pick the model that matches your calls. Many short calls suit per-minute billing. Fewer, longer calls suit per-call or per-customer billing.
Pros and cons of each tool
These come from the vendors’ own pages. They are not quality claims.
Upfirst
- Pros: the lowest entry price here; a 14-day trial; named calendar connections; works for “every call, overflow only, or after hours”; “35+ languages”; extra agents $9.95/mo. (Upfirst pricing)
- Cons: only 30 calls on Starter, then $1.50 per call.
Rosie
- Pros: a 7-day trial; spam detection and a website chat widget on the entry plan; warm transfers (the caller is introduced to the person) on Scale. (Rosie pricing)
- Cons: on-calendar booking starts at $149/mo; website texting is a $50/mo add-on.
Goodcall
- Pros: no per-minute billing; a free demo agent before you pay; Goodcall says it tells you “when a bigger plan would be cheaper”. (Goodcall pricing)
- Cons: the highest entry price of the call-based tools ($79); Starter is limited to 1 external tool and 1 team member. How booking works is unconfirmed: Goodcall describes its Growth plan as “For a busy shop booking work by phone”.
Frontdesk (My AI Front Desk)
- Pros: one plan covers voice, web chat, two-way text messages, a CRM and automations; Zapier on every plan; “20+ languages”. (Frontdesk pricing)
- Cons: $99/mo on monthly billing; usage-credit rates beyond the plan are unconfirmed; trial terms “depend on your chosen plan”.
Dialzara
- Pros: a low start ($29); “UK, AU, NZ, and International phone numbers available upon request”; Zapier and Make connections; no contract. (Dialzara pricing)
- Cons: only 60 minutes on Lite, with no warm transfer on Lite; a US number is the default. “Calendar-aware appointment booking” is listed under its text-message agent, so booking on voice calls is unconfirmed.
RingCentral AI Receptionist
- Pros: “Answer and route calls on any phone system”; learns from your website, FAQs or documents; RingCentral says it can switch languages mid-call. (RingCentral AI Receptionist)
- Cons: the only published price is “Starts at $39” (plans and pricing); the billing unit, what’s included and booking are unconfirmed. It’s aimed at businesses already on RingCentral.

Outside the US? Check these three things first
- Phone numbers. Dialzara says UK, Australian, New Zealand and other international numbers are “available upon request”. For the other five, local numbers outside the US and Canada are unconfirmed. Ask before you pay.
- Languages. Upfirst lists “35+ languages”, Frontdesk “20+ languages” and RingCentral “multiple languages”. The others are unconfirmed.
- Currency and health data. All six show prices in US dollars. If you run a clinic, check your country’s health-privacy rules (for example HIPAA in the US or GDPR in the EU). We haven’t checked any of these tools against them, so compliance is unconfirmed.
Who it's for
Where AI receptionists work well, and where they don’t
These are opinions from owners on Reddit, not facts we’ve checked. In threads on r/Entrepreneur, r/smallbusiness and r/AiForSmallBusiness, owners say:
- They work best for after-hours and overflow calls, with a narrow, clear job.
- Callers must be able to reach a person fast.
- For very few calls, one owner found a simple voicemail-to-text service solved the problem for less.
Alternatives
- Have it done for you: if you’d rather not compare, set up and tune a phone bot, AIFix can set it up for you with AIFix Automation: AI assistants for bookings, reminders and reviews, on accounts in your name. That’s our own service.
- ElevenLabs Agents: a developer tool, not a ready-made receptionist. ElevenLabs launched new real-time speech models on 20 October 2026 (ElevenLabs), priced at “$0.08 + LLM usage” per minute on its API pricing page (checked 22 Oct 2026). “LLM usage” is the extra cost of the AI language model.
- Voicemail-to-text: for very low call volumes.
FAQ
Is there a free AI receptionist?
Not among these six. Each one is paid after a free trial or demo: Upfirst has a 14-day trial, Rosie, Frontdesk and Dialzara have 7-day trials, and Goodcall has a free demo agent. RingCentral’s trial terms are unconfirmed.
Can an AI receptionist book appointments?
Some can, on some plans. Upfirst names the calendars it books into from its entry plan. Rosie books on your calendar from its $149 plan. For Goodcall, Dialzara (voice calls) and RingCentral, booking is unconfirmed.
Will it work for a clinic?
Check two things first: the health-privacy rules where you work, and whether the tool says it meets them. We haven’t checked that for any of these tools.
Will it work outside the US?
Possibly, but ask about local phone numbers and languages first. Only Dialzara states that international numbers are available on request.
Have you tested these tools?
Not yet. This comparison is based on each vendor’s published pricing. We’ll add results once we’ve made test calls.
