Canva AI vs Adobe Express (2026): Which Is Better for Social Media Posts? Prices, AI Limits and Free Plans Compared
Canva and Adobe Express both have a free plan and plenty of AI. The real difference for social posts is the AI allowance, counted in different units. Prices in USD, free-plan limits and commercial-use rules from official pages checked 28 Oct 2026.

Verdict: Canva or Adobe Express for your social posts?
Both tools are free to start, and both are now full of AI. If you post several times a week, the price on the pricing page matters less than one question: how much AI do you actually get, and what happens when it runs out? That is where the two tools differ most, and it is counted in two different units. Canva counts “AI uses”. Adobe counts “generative credits”. We never treat 200 of one as comparable to 250 of the other.
We haven’t made any designs in either tool for this comparison, so we don’t say which one produces better posts. We pick by need and cost, using each maker’s own pages:
- Biggest template library and all-in-one AI: Canva Pro. It costs $144 a year (or $18 a month) in the US, and it’s for one person. Canva has shown $180 a year to some visitors in 2026, so check the price at checkout.
- Cheapest monthly paid plan: Adobe Express Premium. It costs $9.99 a month, billed monthly. The US page shows no yearly option today.
- A team of two or more on a budget: Adobe Express Teams. The price is a first-year promo of $4.99 a month per licence, then $7.99 a month. Canva Pro can’t be shared, so a team needs Canva Business at $250 a year per person.
- Free only: both work. Canva gives a clear cap of up to 20 AI uses a month. Adobe gives a limited number of free generations each day, and it doesn’t publish the number.
Research-based comparison. We have not tested either tool hands-on yet. Everything below comes from official pages, checked 28 October 2026, in US dollars before tax. Cost note: both free plans are real, but the heavier AI features sit behind paid plans. Free trials on both tools renew automatically unless you cancel.
At a glance: free plan, first paid plan and AI allowance (USD, US pages)
| Tool | Free plan | Main solo paid plan | Paid AI allowance | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canva | $0. Up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses a month | Pro: $144 a year or $18 a month, one person only | Up to 200 Premium or 20 Ultra uses a month | Heavy AI is capped; the add-on costs $100 per person per month |
| Adobe Express | $0, no card. 'Limited' free daily generations (no number published) | Premium: $9.99 a month, billed monthly (no yearly option on the US page) | 250 generative credits a month | Credits are used up at different rates; the AI Assistant is still in beta |
What we checked
- Opened Canva's US pricing page (signed out, yearly view) and Canva's help pages on AI usage, AI Pass and AI top-ups on 28 Oct 2026
- Read Canva's announcement of Canva Craft (23 Oct 2026), its AI Product Terms, Content License Agreement and Canva Shield page
- Read Adobe Express's US pricing page (Individuals and Businesses), Adobe's generative credits FAQ (updated 27 Oct 2026) and the Express AI Assistant overview (updated 22 Oct 2026)
- Read Adobe's generative AI user guidelines and the Express teams introductory-price terms
- Not done yet: making the same five social posts in both tools, and testing either tool's AI on a paid plan
What we checked, and what still needs testing
We read Canva’s US pricing page, its help pages on AI usage, AI Pass and AI top-ups, its announcement of the Canva Craft image model, and its AI and content terms. On Adobe’s side we read the Express pricing page (both the Individuals and Businesses tabs), the generative credits FAQ, the Free and Premium plan help pages, the AI Assistant overview, the Teams promo terms and Adobe’s generative AI guidelines.
We have not yet made any posts in either tool. Before we say anything about quality or speed, here is the plan, on free accounts only and with nothing posted to a real account:
- An Instagram square post made from a prompt (for example, a bakery sale with 20% off).
- A YouTube thumbnail made from a prompt.
- Remove the background from a product photo.
- Resize one design into a Story or Reel cover.
- Write three captions for the post.
For each step we’ll note the time, any paywall or cap message, whether the export has a watermark, and any item marked “Premium” that we can’t export. Some things can’t be tested for free, and we’ll mark them “not tested”: Canva’s full 200-use Pro allowance and its Ultra tools (a Canva trial gives the Free level of AI), Adobe’s Firefly Pro partner models, and team brand controls.
AI features for social posts, side by side
Both tools now put a chat-style AI front and centre, but they are built differently.
Canva. The headline feature is Canva AI 2.0, which Canva’s pages describe as conversational design with connectors, web research and scheduled tasks, plus Magic Layers. Canva also offers image generation (Dream Lab), Magic Write for text, animations, an AI voice and a video clip generator. Canva’s own pages say everyday “AI design tools” are “abundant” on paid plans and don’t count against your monthly allowance. Those are Canva AI text, Magic Write, photo and video animations and AI voice. On 23 October 2026, Canva launched Canva Craft, its first in-house image model, available “to all Canva users globally” in Dream Lab and through an API. Canva says Craft ranks fourth on the DesignArena leaderboard, writes text in 55 languages and offers more than 30 aspect ratios up to 2K resolution. Those are Canva’s claims, and we haven’t checked them.
Adobe Express. The AI tools include Firefly text-to-image, generative fill, Insert and Remove Objects, Generate Text Effects, a caption writer, translation, a Clip Maker and the new AI Assistant. Adobe’s help page (updated 22 October 2026) says the Assistant is still in beta. It is for individual Free and Premium accounts only, not Teams, Enterprise or Education. It runs on desktop web only, with no mobile app, in English, Bahasa Indonesia, Brazilian Portuguese and Hindi. It uses Firefly plus partner image models (Adobe lists Gemini 3.1 with Nano Banana 2, GPT Image 2 and FLUX.1 Kontext), and the model is picked for you. Adobe’s pricing comparison table still lists the AI Assistant as “In development”, so the pages don’t fully agree with each other.
AI limits explained: Canva “uses” vs Adobe “credits”
This is the part most comparisons skip. The two numbers look similar, but they count different things.
| Canva | Adobe Express | |
|---|---|---|
| What is counted | “AI uses” of Premium or Ultra tools | Generative credits |
| Free | Up to 20 Standard or Premium uses a month; no Ultra tools | “A limited number of free daily generations” that refresh each day; no number published |
| Paid solo plan | Pro: up to 200 Premium or 20 Ultra uses a month | Premium: 250 credits a month |
| Bigger plan | Business: 400 Premium or 40 Ultra uses | Firefly Pro: 4,000 premium credits and unlimited standard image features |
| Reset | Free: 00:00 UTC on the 1st. Paid: on your billing date, monthly, even on yearly plans | Credits don’t roll over |
| Pooled across a team? | No | Per user |
A few details that change how far the allowance goes:
- Canva’s “Premium” tools include Magic Layers, Generate a design, Create an image, Canva Code and the music and sound-effects generator. “Ultra” means conversational design with Canva AI 2.0 and the “Create a video clip” tool. By our maths, one Ultra use takes ten times as much of Pro’s allowance as one Premium use (20 Ultra versus 200 Premium), so heavy video work uses it up quickly.
- Adobe’s credits are spent at different rates. Most standard features cost one credit. Premium features cost more. Adobe’s FAQ lists Firefly Image 5 at 10 credits per generation and video at 20 to 100 credits per second. So 250 credits can mean 250 small actions or a few dozen premium images, depending on what you pick.
- Some Adobe tools use no credits at all. Generate Text Effects, Generate Presentation and Clip Maker are free in Express, according to Adobe’s FAQ.
- Adobe Free has no published daily number. Some third-party sites still say “25 credits a month” for free users. We don’t use that figure, because Adobe’s own page doesn’t give one.
The pricing pages market Canva Pro as “10x more AI than Canva Free” and Business as “20x”. That is Canva’s way of comparing its own tiers. It tells you nothing about Adobe’s credits, so we don’t compare the two directly.
Free plans compared
Both free plans are worth trying before you pay.
- Canva Free: $0, with 1.6 million-plus templates, 4.7 million-plus photos, videos, graphics and audio, one Brand Kit with three colours, 5 GB of storage and up to 20 AI uses a month.
- Adobe Express Free: $0 with no card. Adobe lists 100,000-plus templates on the pricing card (its comparison table says 268,000-plus), over a million Adobe Stock assets, more than 4,000 fonts, 5 GB of storage, 10-day version history and scheduling to one account per social network. Generative AI is limited to the daily allowance.
- Adobe Free also has lifetime caps on some features. Adobe’s pricing table lists 5 free lifetime uses of Generate Presentations and 2 free lifetime uses of 5-second video generation. Those are one-off allowances, not monthly ones.
- Scheduling on Canva Free: unconfirmed. Canva’s Pro plan lists “Social content scheduling”, but we couldn’t confirm whether Free includes it.
Neither free plan is a trick in the sense of hiding the price. The catch is the AI cap, and with Adobe the cap is unpublished, so you find the limit by hitting it.
Pros and cons
These come from the makers’ own pages, not from testing.
Canva
- Pros: the biggest libraries (3.6 million-plus templates and 141 million-plus premium assets on Pro); a published AI allowance with a usage meter; everyday AI writing and animation tools that don’t count on paid plans; a yearly price option; Canva AI works in 18 languages, including Hindi, Arabic, Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese; free for K-12 education and nonprofits; large regional discounts in some countries.
- Cons: Pro is for one person only; the heavy “Ultra” AI is capped at 20 uses a month on Pro; extra AI is the $100-a-month AI Pass; Canva AI can’t be fully turned off; some library content (Branded, Education and Disney) isn’t for commercial use; the AI indemnity is for eligible Enterprise customers only.
Adobe Express
- Pros: the cheapest paid entry ($9.99 a month, no annual commitment); Firefly is marketed as “designed to be commercially safe” and trained on licensed and public-domain content (Adobe’s words); some AI tools never use credits; Adobe Stock and Fonts; a scheduler on the Free plan; cheap Teams seats in the first year.
- Cons: the Free AI allowance isn’t published; credits are a confusing unit; the AI Assistant is in beta, desktop-only and available in four languages; the Premium storage figure conflicts on Adobe’s own page (100 GB on the card, 10 GB in the table); the Teams price rises after year one; Firefly Pro is a separate, pricier plan.
Pricing in USD, with our maths
All prices are from the official US pages, checked 28 October 2026, before tax. Our maths below is a plain sum of list prices. It compares spend, not output.
| Plan | Yearly billing | Monthly billing | AI included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canva Free | $0 | $0 | 20 Standard or Premium uses a month |
| Canva Pro (one person) | $144 a year | $18 a month | 200 Premium or 20 Ultra uses a month |
| Canva Business (per person) | $250 a year | $25 a month | 400 Premium or 40 Ultra uses a month |
| Canva AI Pass add-on | Prorated annual option for yearly subscribers | $100 per person a month | 40x more AI on Pro, 20x on Business |
| Adobe Express Free | $0 | $0 | Limited free daily generations |
| Adobe Express Premium | Unconfirmed (not offered on the US page) | $9.99 a month | 250 credits a month |
| Adobe Firefly Pro (includes Express Premium, without its 250 credits) | Unconfirmed | $19.99 a month | 4,000 premium credits plus unlimited standard image features |
| Adobe Express Teams (per licence) | Annual commitment, billed monthly | $4.99 a month in year one (promo), then $7.99 | 250 credits per user a month |
Worked examples (excluding tax):
- A solo creator, one year. Canva Pro billed yearly is $144, or $216 if you pay $18 a month. Adobe Express Premium is $9.99 × 12 = $119.88. Firefly Pro is $19.99 × 12 = $239.88.
- A solo creator who wants lots of AI. Canva Pro yearly plus AI Pass at $100 a month comes to about $144 + $1,200 = $1,344 a year. Firefly Pro is $239.88 a year. The allowances aren’t the same size, so this shows what you’d spend, not what you’d get.
- A team of three. Canva Business is 3 × $250 = $750 a year, because Canva Pro isn’t allowed for three people. Adobe Express Teams is 3 × $4.99 × 12 = $179.64 in year one, then 3 × $7.99 × 12 = $287.64 a year.
Two notes on Firefly Pro. It includes Express Premium “except the 250 credits”, and swaps them for 4,000 monthly credits plus unlimited standard image features such as Generative Fill in Photoshop. It also adds partner models, Firefly Boards and Photoshop on web and mobile.
Free trials renew automatically. Adobe offers a 30-day trial of Express Premium and a 7-day trial of Firefly Pro, and says “Subscription automatically renews until you cancel”. Canva has a Pro and Business trial too, but we couldn’t confirm its length. During a Canva trial, the AI allowance is the Free level. Set a reminder before you start either one.
If you do want help keeping a posting routine going once you’ve picked a tool, you can let AIFix Autopilot run your content routine. It’s our own service, and you don’t need it to use either tool.
Can you use AI designs commercially?
This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice. Read the terms for your own plan.
- Canva. Canva’s AI Product Terms (effective 26 June 2026) say “you own your Output” and you “may use your Output for any lawful purpose… at your own risk”. That excludes output that edits or includes Canva library content, which stays under the Content License. You must not mislead anyone into thinking AI content was made by a person, and you must not remove provenance (C2PA) metadata. The Content License allows social media posts. Pro content is licensed per design, and Branded, Education and Disney content isn’t for commercial use.
- Adobe. Adobe says, “In general, you may use outputs from generative AI features commercially”, except features marked as beta and non-commercial. Adobe says Firefly is trained on licensed content such as Adobe Stock, plus public-domain content.
- Indemnity. Neither tool gives a solo creator legal cover for AI output. Canva’s indemnity (Canva Shield) is for eligible Enterprise customers. Adobe’s IP indemnification is on select Enterprise plans.
Outside the US?
- Canva sets prices by country. Canva’s pricing page shows local prices that differ from the US prices quoted here, and we don’t convert them to USD as if they were US prices. Check canva.com/pricing for your own region. The US prices in this article come from Canva’s /en_us/ page.
- Adobe: the US page shows dollars. Other countries see local prices that we haven’t captured, so we can’t quote them.
- Canva AI languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Turkish, Arabic, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Indonesian, Thai, Vietnamese and Hindi.
- Adobe AI Assistant (beta): English, Bahasa Indonesia, Brazilian Portuguese and Hindi. Adobe says it isn’t available in some countries and regions; check Adobe’s help page for the current list.
- Payment: Canva accepts PayPal and major cards, plus local methods in some countries. We haven’t confirmed which Adobe payment methods work in each country.
Who it's for
Which should you pick?
| If you… | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Post a few times a week and want the biggest template library | Canva Free, then Pro if you hit the AI cap | Published 20-use free cap, 3.6 million-plus templates on Pro |
| Want the cheapest paid plan and can pay monthly | Adobe Express Premium | $9.99 a month, no annual commitment |
| Are a team of two or more | Adobe Express Teams, or Canva Business | Teams promo is $4.99 a month per licence in year one; Business is $250 a year per person |
| Need a lot of AI in a month | Look at Firefly Pro or a second plan | AI Pass costs $100 per person a month on Canva |
| Want AI that never touches your credits | Try Adobe’s Text Effects, Presentation and Clip Maker | Adobe says these use no credits |
A sensible order is to use both free plans for a week on the same posts, then pay for one month of whichever one you hit the cap on. If your shop or clinic wants posts to flow from your own bookings or price list automatically, you might also want to look at what AIFix builds for businesses.

FAQ
Is Canva AI free?
Partly. Canva Free includes up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses a month and no Ultra tools. Pro raises that to up to 200 Premium or 20 Ultra uses. Everyday tools such as Magic Write are “abundant” on paid plans, according to Canva.
Is Adobe Express free for commercial use?
Adobe says you may generally use outputs from its generative AI features commercially, except features marked as beta and non-commercial. Check the terms for the feature you use, because that rule has an exception.
Do Canva AI uses reset?
Yes. Free plans reset at 00:00 UTC on the 1st of the month. Paid plans reset on your billing date every month, even if you pay yearly. Uses aren’t pooled across team members.
Is Adobe Express or Canva better for YouTube thumbnails?
We haven’t made thumbnails in either tool yet, so we can’t say. Both can generate and resize images. Our thumbnail guide covers prompting.
Can I share Canva Pro?
No. Canva says only one person can use a Canva Pro account. Teams of two or more need Canva Business or Adobe Express Teams.
Which is better for video?
We haven’t tested video in either tool. Canva has a “Create a video clip” tool counted as an Ultra use. Adobe has a Clip Maker that uses no credits, and video generation that Adobe lists at 20 to 100 credits per second.
Why can’t I compare 200 uses and 250 credits?
Canva counts uses of its Premium or Ultra tools. Adobe counts credits that cost different amounts per feature, so 250 credits can be far fewer actions than 250 uses. We list both numbers but never set them side by side as if they matched.
