The short answer
Yes, you can make a Nano Banana YouTube thumbnail for free. Nano Banana is Google’s image model inside the Gemini app, and Google says it is “Available for free”. You describe the picture, Gemini makes it, and you upload it in YouTube Studio. Limits apply, every image carries a visible AI watermark, and you need to check any words in the picture letter by letter. We read Google’s and YouTube’s own pages on 22 October 2026. We haven’t made test thumbnails yet, so this guide follows the official instructions.
- Free: Nano Banana 2 in the Gemini app, with “Create images” in the tools menu. (Google)
- Paid extras: Nano Banana 2.1 and “Redo with Pro” need a Google AI plan. Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month and Pro is $19.99 a month (US prices, USD). (Google, Gemini subscriptions)
- YouTube wants: 16:9, at least 640 pixels wide, JPG or PNG, and a verified account for custom thumbnails. (YouTube Help)
Research-based guide. We haven’t tested Nano Banana for thumbnails yet. Steps and facts come from Google’s and YouTube’s own pages, checked 22 October 2026. Prices are in US dollars (USD) and are US prices; yours may differ.

Developers: the Gemini API also offers Nano Banana models, but API use needs a paid key from Google AI Studio. You don’t need it for thumbnails. (Gemini API docs)
The size YouTube wants
From YouTube Help, checked 22 October 2026:
- Shape: 16:9 for videos and 9:16 for Shorts.
- Size: YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels for videos, with a minimum width of 640 pixels.
- Format: JPG or PNG.
- File size: up to 2 MB when you upload from a phone, or 50 MB from a computer.
- Account: it must be verified to upload custom thumbnails.
- Rules: thumbnails must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. There are also limits on custom thumbnails that “may vary by country/region or channel history”.
If your Gemini download is smaller than 3840 × 2160, it can still work, as long as it’s 16:9 and at least 640 pixels wide. Check the size of the file you download rather than assuming it.
Step by step: your first thumbnail in Gemini
1. Open Create images
Open the Gemini app or gemini.google.com and sign in with a Google Account. Google’s instructions: “select ‘🍌Create images’ from the tools menu. Then add a prompt or upload an image to edit.” (Google)
2. Use a simple prompt formula
Google suggests starting simple, for example “Create an image of a cat napping in a sunbeam on a windowsill”, then adding detail about composition, style and aspect ratio. (Google) For a thumbnail, build on that:
Create an image of [one clear subject] [doing something] in [a simple scene], 16:9, bold contrast, bright colours, empty space on the left for a short title.
Ask for one main subject. Busy pictures are hard to read at phone size.
3. Add your own photo (optional)
Want to appear in the thumbnail? Upload a photo of yourself and ask Gemini to place you in the scene. Only use your own face, or someone who has given you permission. Don’t use celebrities or other people’s photos.
4. Fix the text and details with edits
If you want words in the image, ask for 2 to 4 words in quotes. Then zoom in and check every letter. If something is wrong, ask Gemini to fix it in a follow-up message (“change the word to …”, “make the background darker”). Or leave the text out and add it yourself in a free editor, which gives you full control over spelling and font.
5. Download, check, upload
Download the image and check its pixel size and file size. Then, in YouTube Studio, open Content, choose your video, and under Thumbnail click Upload file, then Save. (YouTube Help) Make two or three versions so you can pick the clearest one.
5 Nano Banana YouTube thumbnail prompts to copy
We wrote these ourselves on Google’s formula. We haven’t run them yet, so treat them as starting points. Replace the brackets.
- Tutorial: “Create an image of a pair of hands [fixing a bicycle chain] on a clean workbench, 16:9, close-up, bright natural light, bold contrast, plain dark background on the left for a title.”
- Before and after: “Create an image of [a messy desk] on the left and [the same desk, tidy] on the right, split down the middle, 16:9, vivid colours, no text.”
- Recipe: “Create an image of [a steaming bowl of lentil soup] on a wooden table, top-down view, 16:9, warm light, lots of empty space at the top.”
- Review or unboxing: “Create an image of [an unbranded pair of headphones] floating above an open box, 16:9, studio lighting, bright gradient background, no logos.”
- Travel or vlog: “Create an image of [a narrow street market at sunset], seen from behind a traveller with a backpack, 16:9, rich colours, the sky left empty for a title.”
The catches
- Visible watermark: Google says Gemini uses “an invisible SynthID watermark, as well as a visible watermark to show they are AI-generated”. Whether any paid plan removes the visible mark is unconfirmed. Don’t crop or hide it to pass the image off as not AI-made. (Google)
- Limits: “Limits apply”, and Google says limits may change. The exact number of free images is unconfirmed. (Google, Gemini Apps limits)
- Misspelt text: AI images can still get letters wrong. Check every word, or add the text yourself.
- Real people: only use your own face, or one you have permission to use. No celebrities.
- YouTube’s rules: thumbnails that break the Community Guidelines can be rejected and get a strike on your channel. (YouTube Help)
- Age and availability: “Compatibility and availability varies. Limits apply. 18+.” (Google)
Free alternatives
- YouTube Studio’s own tools: under Thumbnail you can choose Get suggestions, or use Ask Studio with a prompt like “Create a thumbnail”. YouTube says Ask Studio looks at your video’s transcript and themes. (YouTube Help)
- Your own photo plus a free editor: take a sharp still from your video and add 2 to 4 words of text.
- Short of time every week? Making thumbnails is usually only one job. If you’re also cutting clips, writing captions and posting by hand, want the clips and posts done for you every week? That’s AIFix Creator Autopilot, our own service. For clipping tools, see our Opus Clip alternatives comparison.
What we checked, and what we’ll test
We read Google’s image generation page, the Gemini Apps limits page, the Gemini subscriptions page, two Google announcements and YouTube’s thumbnail help page on 22 October 2026. We have not made thumbnails yet. Next we plan to:
- Make 5 thumbnails on a free account and note when a limit message appears.
- Check the pixel size of a free download, to settle the 1K vs 2K question.
- Photograph where the visible watermark sits.
- Test a 3-word title in English, Hindi and Arabic for spelling.
- Upload one thumbnail to a test channel.
Every example image we add later will be labelled “made with Nano Banana in Gemini”.
