Key takeaway: ChatGPT Team tasks let a whole team hand repeat jobs to ChatGPT, such as a Monday summary or a daily digest, and have them run in the cloud on a schedule or when a new Gmail email or Slack message arrives. OpenAI added them to ChatGPT Business on 15 October 2026. They are a paid feature for Business and Enterprise workspaces, not Free, Go or Plus. They summarise and report; they don’t answer your customers.

  • Who gets it: Business and Enterprise workspaces, subject to workspace permissions. (release notes, help article)
  • Cost of the plan: Business Standard is $25 per seat a month, or $20 a month billed yearly; Premium is $125, or $100 billed yearly. A workspace needs at least 2 paid seats. (billing help, checked 23 Oct 2026)
  • Cost per run: unconfirmed. OpenAI only says admins manage spending controls.

Research-based news. We haven’t set up a Team task ourselves yet. Every fact here comes from OpenAI’s help pages, checked 22 October 2026, with prices rechecked 23 October 2026. Prices are in US dollars (USD) and exclude tax.

What’s new

The ChatGPT Business release notes for 15 October 2026 list “Team tasks in ChatGPT”. The same update added shared Pages and Spaces, admin-approved tool connections, and @ChatGPT in Slack and Microsoft Teams. Team tasks run under the team’s shared service account, so they keep going when everyone has closed ChatGPT.

ChatGPT Team tasks vs personal scheduled tasks

Personal scheduled tasks belong to one person. Team tasks belong to the team. A Team task doesn’t inherit anyone’s personal memories, Custom Instructions or chat history, so everything it needs has to be written into its instructions. Each task keeps its own time zone, which helps teams spread across countries. (help article)

Three ways to start scheduled tasks for a team

  1. Schedule: repeats, for example every weekday at 08:00.
  2. Date and time: runs once.
  3. Trigger: runs when a new Gmail email or a new Slack message arrives.

5 small-business ideas

OpenAI’s own examples are the first four. The fifth is ours.

  • A daily digest of customer changes.
  • A weekly project update posted to Slack.
  • A meeting agenda, ready before the meeting.
  • A short research brief on a topic you follow.
  • Our example: every Monday at 08:00, summarise last week’s booking-request emails for a clinic or salon team.

How to set one up (step by step)

  1. Open the team in ChatGPT and go to Scheduled.
  2. Give the task a name and write its instructions in full.
  3. Choose a trigger: Schedule, Date and time, or a Gmail or Slack trigger.
  4. Optionally pick Plugins and, under Advanced, a Model.
  5. Select Create, then use Run now to try it and Previous runs to check the output.

You can also set tasks up through @ChatGPT in Slack or Microsoft Teams. (help article)

Limits and catches

  • Paid plan only, and admins decide which connections (Gmail, Slack and others) are approved.
  • If the chosen model becomes unavailable, the task pauses. OpenAI retries some temporary errors automatically. A model you can use in your own account may not be available to the team’s service account.
  • No new sign-ins mid-run: an unattended run can’t complete a new app sign-in, so connect apps first.
  • Pausing or deleting a task doesn’t stop a run already in progress.
  • Spending: personal scheduled-task limits don’t set Team task spending. Admins manage spending controls, and on Enterprise, role-based controls decide who can create or edit tasks. How many credits one run uses is unconfirmed.
  • Data: our general advice is to keep personal or patient details out of task instructions until you’ve checked your own data rules.

When you need a real automation tool instead

Team tasks are good at “read, summarise, report”. If you need steps that write into your booking system, send customers reminders or move data between apps every time, a workflow tool is the better fit; see our n8n vs Make vs Zapier comparison. For the assistants themselves, see ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini. Want customer-facing jobs handled too? AIFix Automation sets up bookings, reminders and review requests on accounts in your name. That’s our own service.

What we checked, and what we’ll test

On 22 October 2026 we read the Business release notes (15 October and 24 August entries), the Team tasks help article and the Business billing help article. We haven’t run a task yet. When we do, we’ll set one weekly digest and one Gmail trigger, and note what the admin spending screen shows after each run.
